This is a temporary review to make note that the nuvi 2370lt has not yet been released by Garmin. Unfortunately, some associate sellers are taking advantage of this fact and gaming the system, suggesting they have it in stock but it takes 3 to 5 weeks for delivery. Moreover, the price they are offering this at is now above what Garmin is suggesting as the retail price.

No one has this item in stock and it is a deceptive falsehood for any company to suggest they do have it in stock, thus undermining the trust we give to Amazon and other sellers who choose this site to offer good products and services.

I recently bought this GPS for an upcoming trip to Italy. Early today (the day before departure) I plugged the GPS into my Vista Dell Desktop and registered it with Garmin. As a part of that registration process, Garmin suggested that I download my free updates of the North American and European maps that came pre-installed on the GPS. The North America Update was painfully slow. It took a couple of hours to complete. Europe took a couple of hours to fail with 5 minutes remaining. Tech support simply said try again. Another two hours invested. Same result. Tech support said plug the USB cable into the back of the computer instead of the front. Another two hous invested with exactly the same unhappy ending . . . application failure with 5 minutes to go. Tech support said do it on your MacBook. MacBook says there isn’t enough memory in your GPS to install the Europe Update. Select a smaller region. I select just Italy and Greece and begin the update. That was over an hour ago and the download is only 20% complete.

My plane leaves in about twelve hours. I was counting on this GPS to get me where I am going. I am not happy. I am not confident that his thing on the MacBook is going to work. Oh by the way, the detailed Europe maps than came on the GPS were wiped out by the first unsuccessful update. I got nothing useful.

If this update is not successful overnight, this unit is going back to Amazon and I’ll buy a different brand when I get to Milan on Wednesday.

    Experiences with my New Nuvi:

Registering product: After going to the website,at on the first registration page, I click Continue, and get an error “plugin not installed exception” What plugin?

Email support, a day later get a reply: “you must have a Mac, in which case, you must download a different piece of software and install prior to registration. “

Mac’s are not exactly rare these days, and everyone who has a Mac would get this error. Probably everyone who gets this error will contact customer service, so obviously Garmin knows (and the immediate response of the support person was to tell me it was because I was trying to register it with a Mac). Why not just fix it?

After registration complete, go to get the promised updated maps (one for US, one for Europe). Download updater. Run it. Runs forever. Get error message after some time (left it overnight) that the updater quit unexpectedly. Restart. OK. Rerun. Same error. Go to [...], and find that the map is updated, despite the application crash.

So then update the europe map. Not enough memory to update europe. Have to choose only one part of Europe. I can live with this, but it is not what I paid for.

Run updater overnight. Again, updater crashes, but now I am aware of the problem, and check. Yep, the map is there (or it says it is).

The dashboard tells me I should update my software. Sounds like a good idea. So, I click the button. Now I get a message:
“disconnect your device from your computer and let it restart. Do not turn it on or off until it returns to the main screen* because that may cause your device to become inoperable” Now they have my attention. What was the asterisk? Here:
“* If you have a ….. Nuvi 2370…. Manually restart the device after the software update is complete”

Ok – does this mean connected to the computer or not? Any error, it seems, will render my device inoperable. Nervous, I dismount, disconnect, restart, and reconnect per instructions (or what I think the instructions are).

    It worked.

Now, one of the webpages I saw said I was eligible for a free (Ok, I already paid for it, so “free” is an odd description) city exporer map for North America, and one for Europe. How do I get it? Now the website says that I am updated, and have no free City explorer maps to download.

So, it appears that I am ready at last use it, 3 days after receiving it. I will report on actual usage later.

For now, I will say that this is unfortunately what I have seen from my other Garmin product, specifically my bike computer. The user interfaces are difficult to understand and use, being not intuitive at all. The interface with the website, and software updates, are, as noted above, horribly designed. You do know that Mac users will be getting this software, why not make it seamless? Bottom line- their products have been very annoying to use, and I feel I cannot get the usability promised me because of these factors.

(I have now read other reviews, and find that the very long update process, the crashes of the update software, and the inadequate memory to deliver the promised North America and Europe maps have been found by other users. Bad design. Garmin – you need to fix this.)
